High blood pressure numbers are the target of World Hypertension Day 2011
Too many people don't know that their blood pressure is high. Blood pressure numbers are the focus of this year's World Hypertension Day promoted by the World Hypertension league (WHL):
World Hypertension Day - Tuesday May 17th 2011
Theme: Know your numbers and target your blood pressure.
According to the WHL, globally, 7 million people die and 1.5 billion suffer every year because of high blood pressure. World Hypertension Day has been established to highlight the preventable diseases, such as stroke, heart disease, kidney disease caused by high blood pressure and to communicate public information on prevention detection and treatment.
The WHL stresses the importance of knowing your numbers, (you can get a reminder about the meaning of BP readings and normal and high blood pressure numbers here), and advises regular measurement of blood pressure.
People can augment the readings from the doctor with measurements at home with an automatic upper arm blood pressure monitor.
The WHL also counsels targeting a healthy blood pressure with lifestyle changes:
- Monitor your weight
- Quit smoking
- Make healthy food choices
- Live an active life
Make sure that by May 17 you know if your blood pressure is high. Blood pressure numbers are an important measure of your cardiovascular health and home measurement will help you keep your pressure under control by giving more information about how your body behaves. If you don't yet have a monitor - make this date your deadline.
